England v Australia LIVE: Result from ODI as Travis Head hits century to lead visitors to victory
Travis Head scored a brilliant century as Australia beat England by 24 runs in the first one-day international at The Oval.
Head's 101 off 107 balls was the cornerstone of Australia's total of 280-8, a score that proved to be just beyond England's reach.
The home side were bowled out for 256 in the 49th over, with Jos Buttler top-scoring with 62.
Head's century was his second in ODI cricket, and his first against England.
The left-hander hit 10 fours and two sixes in his knock, and was particularly severe on England's spinners.
He shared a century stand with Steve Smith (56), and the pair put Australia in a strong position before they were both dismissed in quick succession.
England's bowlers struggled to contain Head and Smith, with Chris Woakes the only bowler to take more than one wicket.
The seamer finished with figures of 2-40, while Adil Rashid took 1-55 and Moeen Ali 1-63.
England's batsmen made a decent start to their chase, with Jonny Bairstow (33) and Jason Roy (23) putting on 50 for the first wicket.
However, they lost wickets at regular intervals thereafter, and were never really in contention.
Buttler and Sam Billings (51) gave England a glimmer of hope with a seventh-wicket stand of 80, but once they were both dismissed, the writing was on the wall.
The victory gives Australia a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with the second ODI taking place at Lord's on Saturday.
