Background

The September 11 attacks, also known as the 9/11 attacks, were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda against the United States on the morning of September 11, 2001.

The Attacks

At 9:03 a.m. EDT, United Airlines Flight 175, also a Boeing 767, crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.

At 9:37 a.m. EDT, American Airlines Flight 77, a Boeing 757, crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C.

At 10:03 a.m. EDT, United Airlines Flight 93, a Boeing 757, crashed into a field in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania after some of the passengers and crew members attempted to regain control of the plane from the hijackers.

Aftermath

The 9/11 attacks had a profound impact on the United States and the world.

The attacks led to the War on Terror, a global campaign against terrorism launched by the United States and its allies.

The attacks also led to the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, a new federal agency responsible for protecting the United States from terrorism.
